Uncovering The Mystery: Why Are Egg Prices Rising In Benton City, WA?

Oh my gosh! Before I left on my 6 State journey to Arizona... I was grocery shopping in my little town of Benton City, WA at my favorite Kibe Market.

Can I just say I love this store!  It's small, it has a great staff! Freshly baked bread and all the other supplies for irrigation, dog and horse food, etc. A much-needed store in our town of Benton City. So that's where I was when I was grabbing groceries and eggs!

Have you purchased eggs recently?

I grabbed an 18-pak carton of eggs and some other groceries and headed to the check stand. The eggs were the first thing I laid on the counter.  I couldn't help but gasp when they rang up as $12!!

The lovely checkout lady said 'I know can you believe it?'  I asked why and she had no idea! By the way I can't remember her name but she has the greatest laugh and is just so fun to talk to when I go through her check out line!

I wondered and commented at the time that perhaps it had something to do with the 'Bird Flu'

She told me that the store was getting incubators to prepare for more people shopping for supplies for raising chickens for eggs.

I know some people began raising chickens during the pandemic so those people are ahead of the game.

This serious issue of the Bird Flu is ongoing. Two sites for information are:

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): For information on human health and the H5N1 virus.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA): also has information on animal health and the impact on the poultry industry.

How hard is it to raise chickens for eggs?

It seems like Chickens would be a lot of work, especially taking care of them during the cold winter months. But, depending on how things go...We may need to all consider it.

I have friends that do it well. Of course, the first thing you need is enough room for an adequate pen for them and a hutch for laying eggs. Lights, warmers, and other supplies are needed.
